To achieve a high-performing virtual team, several core process elements must be addressed:
- Creating accountability
- Effective communication
- Conflict management
Accountability is a major challenge for virtual teams, especially since many virtual team members have responsibilities in addition to participation in a specific virtual team. Lack of visibility can lead to reduced risk-taking and avoidance. The highest performing organizations have the most effective methods for holding employees accountable. These organizations clearly articulate the team’s goals and their relationship to business goals and organizational mission: What is the desired end state? What is success? What is the timeline, and how will milestones be measured? Accountability is measured by performance of specific objectives, with transparent monitoring systems. Team roles and responsibilities are clarified at the outset of team formation: Who makes what type of decision, and exactly what is the process?
Taking charge of accountability processes at the onset of team formation is the best way to ensure accountability, but if problems develop, a simple plan for getting back on track includes
asking team members to take stock of their own actions:
- What might I have done (or not done) to contribute to the current situation?
- What can I do to help resolve the problem or get back on track?
- What action can I take to prevent this situation in the future?
