Establishing Trust in Global Teams

It is more difficult to establish trust in a global team than it is in a collocated team. Nonverbal communication plays a significant role in this. When colleagues get to know each other primarily through verbal and written communication, as much as 55% of the meaning of the communication, the nonverbal component, may be missed. The missing cues include eye contact, appearance, gestures, posture, facial expression, touch, movement, and surroundings.

Improving the “getting-to-know-you” process in distributed teams should be a deliberate process, not something left to chance. Implementing the following practices can greatly enhance trust development:
