Besides beginning with good team hygiene, what can we do to foster effective communication and productive relationships in virtual teams? We can start by keeping teams as small as possible, or configure large teams into smaller sub-teams. We can extend the deliberate creation of accountability by encouraging team members to take on establishing “swift trust.” Research indicates that despite the importance of long-term knowledge of another’s character, unless one trusts quickly, one may never trust at all. Swift trust is a key factor in developing deep trust. And we can intentionally develop skills that lead to swift trust by creating a framework to quickly accelerate relationship trust among colleagues. Some simple steps to generate swift trust include:
